Greetings Experts!

On this, your "home group" page, you will be writing a brief article about what you learned about each of the topics: Alcatraz, Al Capone, autism, and the Great Depression. Each of your paragraphs should paraphrase the five w's, h + double w that you learned. Pretty much, you are writing a brief article about what you learned, making sure you answered who, what, where, why, when, how and why it is important. Your group will be reading your page, and the others in the class, to learn about all of the topics.

Al Capone

Al Capone was born on January 17th, 1899, and grew up to be mknown as one of "America's Best Known Gangster". He grew up in Brooklyn, New York and lived in a rough neighborhood. In that neighborhood, he became part of a small street gang. When he got older, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he was, involved in many illigal activities. He was eventually caught and sentenced to ten yearsof prison at a big federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia. When word got around that he had taken over the jail, he was shipped off to Alcatraz, a prison on an island of the coast of San Francisco, home to the worst criminals. Ten years later when he was released, he lived in his home in Florida, where he died a few years later from Paresis of the brain, which he had been suffering over a long period of time. He died on January 25th, 1947.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz island, also known as " The Rock," is located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. At one time it had the highest security system in the country and housed the worst criminals from all over the world. Alcatraz Island was founded and named in 1775 by a spanish explorer named Juan Manuel de Ayala. Seventy-five years later, in 1850, President Millard Fillmore signed an order saying the island is going to be used for military purposes. During that period, 1000 or so cannons were placed around the island to protect the bay of San Francisco. In the late 1850s the military started using the island for military prisoners they captured. It was one of the best locations for a prison because prisoners would have to escape and swim the freezing cold waters of the San Francisco. Alcatraz also housed many rebellious American Indians, and during the Spanish American War the number of inmates rose on the island. Then, during the period of 1934-1963, Alcatraz was used as a prison for some of the most notorious gangsters and murderers. Al Capone was among the 1,576 men who were housed at Alcatraz. Some other gangsters like Al Capone who were housed at Alcatraz included George "Machine gun" Kelly, Alvin "Creepy Karpis" Karpowicz and many others. Over time there were 14 attempted escapes involving 36 inmates. "The Federal Bureau of Prisons recorded 23 inmates captured, 6 shot and killed, two drowned, and five went missing and presumed drowned." One of the most famous escapes in the history of Alcatraz Island was when 6 prisoners overpowered prison guards and gained access to weapons. After they took the weapons they killed two correction officers and wounded about 18 others. The United States Marines were called in to help in this battle, and the marines killed three of the inmates and the other three were captured. The three prisoners captured went on trial with two of these men receiving the death penalty. Due to the islands location, shipping the food and supplies became too expensive. Therefore, in 1963 the prison closed. In 1969, a group of Indians came and claimed the island of Alcatraz as their land. Today, Alcatraz attracts roughly 1 million tourists a year.

The Great Depression

In this space, you need to include a minimum of one image of something that symbolizes Autism with an ORIGINAL caption, as well as summarize your 5w's and double why that you answered during your research. (Refer to the example that we worked on in class.)

Autism

What is Autism...
Autism is a develpoment disorder that causes kids to live and see the world in a different way than most children. It affects adults and children around the world.Autism only happens to one in every onehundren and ten children. Autism is something that children are born with. Autsim is not a disesase but, is caused by the brain not develpoing correctly before the baby is born. It is also not something that goes away, but there are many ways children and adults with autism can get help. There are also many ways that we, children and adults, can help people with autism.Children with autism are usually diagnosed between ages one and a half, and four. Having autism means that you may have trouble communicating with other people. Children with autism also have trouble connecting with other children. They don't always understand what different facial expressions or bady languge mean. Kids with autism will mostl likely need help for the rest of their lives, depending on the severity of their autism. So far there is no found cure for autism.

"Always unique, totally interesting, sometimes mysterious." All great ways to describe children with autsim.

Did you know about 1 out of 150 children will get diagnosed with autism? Autism is a complex disorder, which affects the brain, distinguished by troubles with social interactions, communication, and behavioral issues. In 1938 Dr. Leo Kanner discovered this disorder; he published a paper in 1948 in the journal, The Nervous child. He did not develop a medical test that tests you for autism, instead he looked for symptoms. We still do that today since there is no medical test quite yet. More than 500,000 individuals are affected, but there is no one cause for why these people got this disorder. Having this disorder doesnt mean that autistic people are dumb or stupid, actually most people who have autism are extremely intelligent. Some causes are the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccination, it could be genetically based, and Encephalitis. Encephalitis is a rare inflammation in the brain that has been linked to autism. No one has developed a cure yet but there are many treatments for autism. Treatment includes a lot of therapy and one drug called Ritalin. The last question is why is autism so important? Autism is very important because it has brought doctors or scientists to further information about the brain. The findings have helped us to know how to provide help for autistic people and their families.
